It was just before sunrise on Labor Day when a routine patrol turned into the arrest of a man wanted for trying to kill a police officer in another state.
Two Cars, One Empty Pool Parking Lot
According to a release from the Seagoville Police Department, around 3:30 A.M. on Monday, September 2nd, 2024, Officer Josiah Beck noticed two suspicious vehicles parked in the 2800 block of Highland Meadows Drive. The vehicles were sitting in the parking lot at the entrance to the Highland Meadows subdivision community pool, which was closed at that hour.
Officer Beck approached one of the vehicles and made contact with a man and a woman inside. The man was identified as Chaderious Avery, a 27 year old Black male.
A Warrant From Arkansas
During a routine records check on Avery, Seagoville Police Department dispatch notified Officer Beck that Avery was wanted on a warrant out of the Pine Bluff, Arkansas Police Department for Attempted Capital Murder. He was also wanted for a parole violation tied to a previous charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, according to the department.
What Happened In Arkansas
The Seagoville Police Department later obtained details of the Attempted Capital Murder warrant directly from the Pine Bluff Police Department. According to that account, Avery had been involved in a shoot out with another man in a parking lot. A female officer who witnessed the gunfire from inside her patrol vehicle said Avery then walked up to her driver’s side window, placed a gun against the glass, and fired at her as she dropped to the floorboard to take cover.
The officer was not seriously injured. Avery fled the scene afterward, and investigators tracked his cell phone heading toward Texas, the release stated.
Arrest And Booking
Once Officer Beck confirmed the active warrant, Avery was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Dallas County jail for booking.
The woman who had been with Avery was not connected to the events in Arkansas and was not involved in his arrest. She was released without charges and will not be identified, as she is believed to have been an innocent party, according to the Seagoville Police Department.
A Community Thank You
In its release, the Seagoville Police Department pointed to the broader context of recent unprovoked attacks on law enforcement nationwide, and credited Officer Beck’s actions that night with taking a dangerous individual off the street before he could pose any further threat.
“Thank you Officer Beck for all that you do in keeping the community and the citizens of Seagoville safe,” the department said in its release.
