Families, birdwatchers and educators will have several opportunities to explore the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center during August, including reduced admission, an early-morning birding program and two education open houses.
The Wetland Center, located at 655 Martin Lane in Combine, works to educate the public and support research involving water reuse, water quality and supply, wildlife conservation and wetland systems.
Dollar Days Continue Throughout August
Visitors can explore the Wetland Center for a $1 admission fee throughout August during its regular public operating days.
The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It is closed to the public Sunday and Monday.
The reduced admission offers families an affordable opportunity to walk the center’s boardwalk and trails, observe wildlife and learn how wetlands contribute to conservation and the region’s water supply.
General visits during regular operating hours do not require reservations, although advance registration is required for certain guided programs.
Early-Morning Bird Tour Scheduled Aug. 1
The Wetland Center’s First Saturday Walk & Talk Bird Tour will begin at 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1.
Led by experienced master birders, the program is designed for beginning and intermediate birdwatchers. Participants will learn how to use binoculars and field guides, identify birds and maintain a personal life list of species they have observed.
The tour is suitable for participants ages 10 and older. Because the route includes uneven surfaces, visitors are encouraged to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
Binoculars are available to borrow with a valid driver’s license. Reservations are required.
The tour costs $10 per person and includes admission to the Wetland Center. Members may receive a 20% discount by contacting the center for a promotional code.
Questions about the bird tour may be directed to jreynolds@wetlandcenter.com.
Open Houses Invite Educators to Explore Programs
Teachers, educators and school administrators are also invited to attend one of two Education Open Houses during August.
The first open house will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. A second session is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22.
Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the grounds, meet members of the education team and learn about field trips and educational experiences planned for the fall and spring.
The center describes the open houses as admission-only events. Lunch will be provided for registered participants.
The programs may be especially helpful for teachers and administrators considering outdoor learning opportunities involving wildlife, wetland ecology, conservation and water systems.
