The 1995 Seagoville Dragons accomplished something the program had not done in 45 years: win a playoff game.
The season’s defining stretch began with a 21-13 victory over Lincoln. Curtis Mann carried the ball 28 times for 145 yards, while Justin Clary and Jason Nixon also scored. The victory secured the District 11-4A championship and sent the Dragons into the postseason with momentum.
In the bi-district round, Seagoville defeated Roosevelt 33-23. Mann delivered another dominant performance, rushing for 153 yards and three touchdowns. Raymond Phillips returned a kickoff 82 yards, and Aaron Nichols kicked a late field goal to protect the victory.
It was Seagoville’s first postseason win since the 1950 regional championship season.
The next round produced one of the most unusual victories in school history. Seagoville and Everman finished regulation tied 20-20. Under the playoff rules used at the time, the Dragons advanced on penetrations after reaching the Bulldogs’ 15-yard line in the closing seconds.
That victory sent Seagoville into the third round of the playoffs for the first time in program history.
The run ended with a 48-3 loss to Sulphur Springs in the region final, but the season had already earned its place in local history. The book describes the Dragons’ run as a “Cinderella” season, and the label fits.
