The 1970s were a decade of dramatic highs and difficult lows for Seagoville football.
The decade began with two impressive shutouts. In 1970, Joe Scott threw two long touchdown passes to Charles Coleman in a 30-0 victory over Kaufman. The Dragons then forced seven turnovers while crushing DeSoto 37-0.
By 1971, however, Seagoville was fighting through a difficult season. The Dragons managed a 0-0 tie with Waxahachie after gaining 305 rushing yards but struggled to finish drives. Better moments followed in 1972, including a 16-8 victory over Duncanville in which the Dragons allowed only three first downs and 86 total yards.
The middle of the decade brought more frustration. Seagoville endured a long losing streak that stretched to 15 games before the 1977 Dragons defeated Terrell 21-13. James Collier scored twice, Monte Foster added another touchdown and William Hilleman converted all three extra points.
That victory helped introduce one of the best running backs in school history. Collier rushed for 1,225 yards and 10 touchdowns in 1977 before being named the district’s Offensive Player of the Year in 1978.
Ricky Richards continued the running-back tradition. He rushed for 163 yards on just 11 carries and scored three touchdowns against Commerce in 1979. The following season, he produced 1,400 yards and earned district Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The 1970s tested the program’s resilience, but it also laid the groundwork for Seagoville’s reputation as “Running Back High.”
