A piece of Seagoville’s Hollywood history has surfaced online, and it is well worth a look. A silent home movie titled “Chill Wills Returns to Seagoville February 1962” has been preserved and shared on YouTube, offering a rare glimpse of one of the town’s most famous native sons making a visit back home during the early 1960s.
Theodore Childress “Chill” Wills was born in Seagoville on July 18, 1902, and went on to become one of the most recognizable character actors in Hollywood Westerns. According to the Texas State Historical Association, Wills was a performer from early childhood, singing in tent shows, vaudeville, and stock companies by the age of 12. He later formed the singing group the Avalon Boys in the 1930s, which led to his discovery by a studio executive at the Trocadero nightclub in Hollywood and launched his decades long film career.
Wills appeared in more than 90 films over his career, according to Wikipedia, often playing rugged, folksy supporting characters. He is perhaps best remembered for two very different roles: providing the voice of Francis the Talking Mule in a series of 1950s comedies, and playing Beekeeper, Davy Crockett’s companion, alongside John Wayne in The Alamo in 1960, a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
By February 1962, when this footage was filmed, Wills was in the middle of starring as Ben Higgins on the CBS series Frontier Circus, which aired for its only season from 1961 to 1962. Despite his California based film and television career, Wills remained a frequent visitor to Texas throughout his life. Both of his children settled in Dallas, and according to the Texas History Notebook, he could often be seen around town when visiting and even had his western boots custom made by a shop in Lubbock.
This particular piece of footage is silent, as was common for home movies of the era, and offers viewers a chance to see Wills back in the town where his story began nearly 60 years before his Hollywood breakthrough. For Seagoville residents and local history enthusiasts, it is a small but meaningful window into the connection between a global entertainment figure and the small Texas town that shaped him.
