CRANDALL, Texas — Three years ago this week, a quiet residential stretch of West Vanston Street in downtown Crandall became the scene of a violent home invasion that left one man shot and another assaulted with a firearm, in a case that police would later trace back to drugs and a large sum of cash.
According to the Crandall Police Department, officers responded to the 200 block of West Vanston Street at approximately 7:04 p.m. on February 8, 2023, after receiving a call about a shooting. When officers arrived, they found two male victims inside the residence. One had been shot in the thigh. The other had been assaulted with a firearm.
Officers began administering first aid to both men until EMS arrived and took over treatment on scene. Both victims were transported to the hospital with injuries described by police as non life threatening.
Witnesses inside the home told investigators that three men, two identified as Black and one as white, entered the residence through the front door and immediately turned violent. According to the department’s statement, the men physically assaulted one victim with a firearm before shooting the second victim in the thigh. Other witnesses inside the home managed to escape through a back window and called 911 once they were safely outside.
In an update issued the following day, Crandall police said the motive behind the attack centered on drugs and money. Investigators told the public that the suspects had asked the victims where the money was located as soon as they entered the home.
“Investigators spoke to both victims and they both advised the suspects asked where the money was when they entered the residence,” Crandall Police Department said in their updated statement, adding that the incident appeared isolated to that residence.
Crime scene investigators searching the home discovered between four ounces and five pounds of marijuana, along with nearly $73,000 in cash. The cash was turned over for seizure proceedings handled jointly by the Crandall Police Department and the Kaufman County District Attorney’s Office.
No arrests were announced in the materials released by police, and the case remains a reminder of how quickly an ordinary Wednesday evening on a residential Crandall street turned into a scene that brought emergency crews, investigators and a Crime Stoppers appeal to a quiet block of West Vanston.
