A balloon race that began in New Mexico made Crandall international aviation news on October 9, 2023. The Polish entry POL-1 crashed while competing in the 66th Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, a long-distance gas-balloon competition.
The team had launched from Albuquerque on October 7. Its pilots were Krzysztof Zapart and Piotr Halas. Unlike a race around a marked course, the competition rewarded the team that landed farthest from its starting point.
Contemporary reporting said the balloon struck a power line during an apparent descent and caught fire. Both pilots survived. Race-tracking information placed POL-1 over Crandall shortly before its position stopped updating.
The event supplied an unexpected answer to a question many residents might never have considered: What could connect Crandall to Poland and an international balloon competition? For one October evening, the answer was overhead.
Gas balloons also differ from the familiar hot-air balloons that use burners to heat air. Their lifting gas allows extended flights, making a journey lasting several days possible. That endurance is central to the Gordon Bennett competition.
Crandall was not the intended finish of a scheduled local exhibition. It became the emergency endpoint of a competitive flight launched hundreds of miles away, bringing an international sporting event into a setting more accustomed to highway traffic than balloon-racing crews.
