Unsolved Case Files: Turn Your Next Gathering Into a Mystery

Date:

A slumber party can become an investigation. A school vacation afternoon can turn into a search for a hidden motive. And a quiet evening at home can begin with one question: Which suspect’s story falls apart when you examine the evidence?

Blackland Case Archive: Unsolved Case Files brings six fictional serial-killer investigations to readers ages 14 and older, with stories set in Seagoville and Crandall, Texas.

Available through Shop in Seagoville, each $14.95 printable PDF game invites players to read witness statements, question alibis, reconstruct timelines and build an accusation from the clues.

The hometown settings provide a familiar backdrop, but every investigation is fictional. These are mystery games—not accounts of actual local crimes.

Give Your Gathering Something to Solve

For teenagers planning a slumber party, friends gathering during school vacations or adults looking for a different kind of game night, the case files offer a shared challenge: uncover the detail everyone else overlooked.

Spread the printed documents across the kitchen table, let someone read a witness interview aloud and compare competing theories. One player might spot a suspicious appointment while another notices that a travel timeline simply does not work.

Each game supports one or more players, making it an option for solo sleuths, date nights and group gatherings. Players work through evidence rather than performing assigned characters, so the focus stays on reading, discussion and deduction.

Because the stories involve fictional serial-killer investigations, hosts should consider the subject matter when planning activities for younger teenagers. The collection is intended for ages 14+.

Six Cases, Six Different Secrets

Every case offers a different starting point—and a new reason to distrust the obvious explanation.

The Midnight Frequency — Seagoville | Difficulty 3/5

Five voices vanished. One broadcast kept talking.

Five contributors to an oral-history project are dead. Tapes, numbered cards and an inaccurate studio clock could overturn the accepted timeline. Examine recording records, clock discrepancies and a torn voucher to uncover what the recordings were meant to reveal.

The Orchard Ledger — Crandall | Difficulty 3/5

Five names crossed out. A sixth line left blank.

The deaths of five former harvest-cooperative members lead to folded seed invoices, a cryptic bookkeeper’s note and a ledger from a closed packing shed. Follow coded credits, chest keys and conflicting ownership records to discover who wanted the past buried.

The Last Picture Show — Seagoville | Difficulty 4/5

The reel was cut. The truth survived between frames.

Five film-restoration volunteers are dead, and their final project contains a missing sequence someone never wanted shown. Put surviving frames in order, examine screening logs and trace a private reel to decide which witness deserves closer scrutiny.

The Lantern Trail — Crandall | Difficulty 4/5

Every lantern marked a promise someone wanted buried.

Five volunteer inspectors raised concerns about a private evening festival. Now all five are dead. Brass lantern tags, volunteer records and a weathered route board may reveal an impossible journey hidden inside a suspect’s account.

The Thirteenth Appointment — Seagoville | Difficulty 4/5

The clocks disagree. The appointment book does not.

Five estate appraisers received clock-face appointment cards before their deaths. Decode the appointment index, compare conflicting clocks and examine estate valuations to identify the visitor concealed within an ordinary afternoon schedule.

When the Storm Went Quiet — Crandall | Difficulty 5/5

A voice answered the radio. Its owner was gone.

Five volunteers auditing a private disaster-relief fund have died during one storm season. A radio response appears to place a key suspect far away. Study transcripts, channel records and depot movements to determine whether that apparent alibi can be trusted.

Open the File. Follow the Evidence.

Inside the investigations are fictional newspaper coverage, victim and suspect information, case reports, evidence records, maps, interviews and an investigation worksheet.

Hints and solutions are kept separate from the player file, allowing participants to investigate before checking their conclusions.

For a group night, keep the solution aside, arrange the evidence where everyone can examine it and invite each player to explain their theory. Before making a final accusation, ask three questions: Who had a motive? Who had the opportunity? What evidence supports the conclusion?

The difficulty ratings also help buyers choose their starting point. The two 3/5 cases offer the collection’s lower-rated challenges, while When the Storm Went Quiet carries its highest difficulty rating.
