Crandall Athletics Adds More Than 300 Participants Since 2020

Crandall ISD athletics is carrying hundreds more students than it did four years ago. The department now sits in the middle of a growth story that touches gyms, fields, budgets and coaching staffs.
Secondary athletic participation in Crandall ISD climbed from 1,052 students in the 2020 to 2021 school year to 1,374 students in the 2024 to 2025 school year. That is an increase of 322 participants across the district’s middle school and high school programs. Athletic Director Kyle Hardin delivered the figures to the Crandall ISD Board of Trustees during the annual athletics update in January.
The growth arrives alongside a district that keeps adding students every fall. It also arrives just as the Pirates prepare for a step up in classification.
The Growth in Plain Numbers
The reported figure covers secondary athletic participation across Crandall ISD. That means students in grades 7 through 12 who are enrolled in an athletic program.

What the District Reported and What It Did Not
The athletics update presented to trustees gave a single districtwide participation total. It did not include a public breakdown showing how many students play each individual sport.

The Sports Students Can Choose
Crandall ISD offers athletic programs beginning in middle school and continuing through high school. The lineup gives students a wide set of entry points across three seasons.
Enrollment Growth Is Feeding the Trend
Crandall ISD reported a district total of 7,449 students in its fall 2025 enrollment snapshot. That was an increase of 525 students over the prior year.
The two campuses that feed the varsity pipeline are already crowded. Crandall High School and Heartland Middle School both sat above 80 percent of building capacity last fall.

Facilities Are Feeling the Squeeze
District leaders flagged the facilities question before the participation number was ever presented. In an April 2025 planning discussion trustees reviewed gym and field usage needs tied to the opening of a second middle school.
Administrators noted that running three secondary campuses increases demand on the same fields and gyms. The athletics department has worked with local leagues on scheduling to manage that pressure.
Stadium capacity is the sharpest example. Pirate Stadium currently seats 3,300 fans, which is smaller than many stadiums in comparable 5A Division I districts.
Under Consideration
Citing safety, security and capacity, district leaders told the board Crandall ISD may explore renting nearby stadiums for varsity home football games. No final decision on that option was presented at the January meeting.
Coaching Positions Have Been Restructured
The clearest staffing response came in February 2025. For the first time in district history Crandall ISD separated the athletic director role from the head football coach role.
Kyle Hardin took the athletic director position. Darrell Lewis serves as assistant athletic director and head football coach.
District leaders said the split allows each leader to focus on expanding the programs under them. The change was framed directly around the district’s rapid growth.
Head coaching hires have followed at individual programs. Courtney Posey was announced as head volleyball coach in April 2025 and Chris Wallace was welcomed as head baseball coach in June 2025.
Building a Coaching Pipeline From Within
Hardin’s January presentation put heavy weight on leadership development. The department has built internal programs designed to move assistants toward head coaching roles.

How Female Participation Fits the Picture
The district did not publish a male and female participation split alongside the 1,374 total. Readers should treat any gender specific growth figure as unverified until the district releases one.
What the record does show is investment on the girls side of the department. Crandall ISD staffs a dedicated girls athletic coordinator position within the athletics office.
The Seat at the Table initiative was created specifically to support female coaches in the district. Program level hires such as the volleyball coaching change point in the same direction.
A Tougher Competitive Road Ahead
Growth has consequences on the field as well. Hardin told trustees the district would compete as a 5A Division I football program in the 2026 through 2028 UIL realignment cycle.
Crandall missed the 6A cutoff by 27 students. The UIL released district assignments in February.

The Pirates finished the 2025 football season at 7-4 overall. Crandall went 4-3 in District 6-5A Division II and placed fourth.
