Story times, chess and a new homeschool activity give local families several reasons to visit area libraries this week.
Fall programming is beginning in earnest at the Seagoville Public Library and Crandall-Combine Community Library following the Labor Day weekend.
For Sept. 7–13, the two libraries have four scheduled activities, including the return of children’s story times in both communities. Seagoville is also welcoming chess players and launching a weekly program for homeschooled children.
Here is what local families need to know this week.
Seagoville Reopens With Chess Club
The Seagoville Public Library reopened Tuesday after being closed Friday through Monday for the Labor Day weekend.
Its first scheduled activity of the shortened week is Chess Club, which meets Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The club is recommended for ages 8 and older. Players of different skill levels are welcome, allowing beginners to learn the game while more experienced players find new opponents.
Chess Club ordinarily meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. After this week’s gathering, the next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 22.
Preschool Story Time Begins Wednesday
Families with preschool-age children can visit the Seagoville library Wednesday, Sept. 9, for the beginning of its fall Story Time schedule.
The program runs from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and is intended for children ages 3 to 5.
Story Time is scheduled as a weekly Wednesday program. The recurring activity introduces young children to books and group learning while giving parents and caregivers another local option during the weekday morning hours.
Homeschool Hangout Makes Its Debut
A new activity for local homeschool families begins Thursday, Sept. 10.
Homeschool Hangout will be held from 11 a.m. to noon and is designed for children ages 6 to 12. The program is scheduled to continue every Thursday.
The addition gives homeschooled students a regular opportunity to participate in an organized group activity at the library. It also broadens Seagoville’s daytime programming beyond its preschool Story Time sessions.
The Seagoville Public Library is located at 702 N. Highway 175. Its regular hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. The library is closed Saturday and Sunday.
Story Time Returns in Crandall
The Crandall-Combine Community Library begins its 2026–2027 Children’s Story Time schedule Tuesday, Sept. 8.
The session will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the library, located at 500 W. Lewis St. in Crandall.
A second September Story Time is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 22, also from 10 to 11 a.m.
The newly posted school-year calendar includes additional sessions in October, November, December, January, February, March and April. A separate holiday event is scheduled for Dec. 5.
The Crandall-Combine Community Library is also recognizing September as Library Card Sign-Up Month, encouraging residents to obtain a card and explore the materials and services available through the library.
During the school year, the library is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sunday.
Teen Night Is Coming Next
Seagoville’s fall schedule continues next week with Teen Night on Monday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Teen Night is intended for ages 13 to 17 and can include games, crafts, art and other activities. The program follows a second-and-fourth-Monday schedule.
With story times returning, Homeschool Hangout beginning and established clubs resuming their regular schedules, September marks the return of a fuller calendar at both community libraries.
