The final weekend of August brings one of the busiest sports weekends of the summer around Seagoville, Crandall and Combine.
High school football officially returns Friday night, with both Seagoville and Crandall opening the 2026 season on the road.
The weekend also includes varsity volleyball tournament action, cross country, dirt-track racing at RPM Speedway, and the final Saturday of August Dollar Days at the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center.
Other activities include a two-day women’s conference in Seagoville and the closing weekend of the Clear the Shelters campaign.
The biggest consideration may be the weather. Triple-digit afternoon temperatures are expected throughout the weekend, so anyone heading to outdoor activities should plan for water, sunscreen and extra breaks from the heat.
Seagoville Opens Football Season at Palestine
Friday night marks the beginning of the 2026 football season for the Seagoville Dragons.
Seagoville travels to Palestine for a 7:30 p.m. non-district opener against the Wildcats. Palestine High School is located at 1600 South Loop 256 in Palestine, making this one of the longer road trips Dragons fans will make this season.
The matchup also begins a new season for a Seagoville team trying to remain in the playoff picture in District 5-5A Division II.
Shop in Seagoville’s preseason coverage projects the Dragons as a team capable of another winning season, but Friday should provide the first real indication of how quickly a rebuilt defense and returning offensive playmakers are coming together.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Crandall Visits Class 6A Braswell
Crandall begins its season with an even bigger classification challenge.
The Pirates travel north to face Class 6A Denton Braswell at 7 p.m. Friday. Crandall ISD and Braswell High School both list the varsity game for Friday night, with Braswell designating it as a home game and Future Bengal Night.
It is the first of three demanding non-district games for Crandall. The Pirates follow Braswell with road games at Rowlett before returning home Sept. 11 against Terrell.
Crandall went 7-4 and reached the playoffs last season. Shop in Seagoville’s preseason analysis has identified the Pirates as a legitimate contender in their new District 7-5A Division I alignment.
For local football fans, Friday provides an immediate choice: follow the Dragons east toward Palestine or the Pirates north toward Braswell.
Seagoville Volleyball Visits South Oak Cliff
Football will not be the only Seagoville team competing Friday.
The Lady Dragons travel to South Oak Cliff for another early-season volleyball match after defeating Molina 3-0 earlier this week.
There is one schedule issue worth noting before fans leave home. Current public listings disagree on the exact start time, with one Seagoville schedule showing 7 p.m. and another regional schedule feed listing 7:30.
Fans should confirm the match time through the school or team before traveling.
Seagoville entered the season with a large group of varsity-experienced players returning from a program that improved from three wins in 2023 to seven in 2024 and 13 last season.
Lady Pirates Continue Three-Day Forney Tournament
Crandall volleyball has an entire weekend of competition ahead.
The Lady Pirates are participating in the varsity Forney Tournament, which began Thursday and continues Friday and Saturday at Forney High School, 1800 College Ave.
Crandall ISD currently blocks out 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for the tournament but notes that individual match times are still to be determined. That means Pirate fans should check the latest bracket before making the short drive to Forney.
The tournament gives Crandall another opportunity to accumulate meaningful early-season matches before the schedule settles into its regular September rhythm.
Crandall Cross Country Runs Friday in Wylie
Crandall runners are also in action Friday morning.
The Pirates are scheduled for the DUBEast XC Invitational, hosted by Wylie East at Founders Park in Wylie. Crandall ISD lists the meet on its Friday athletics schedule, while Texas MileSplit confirms the Aug. 28 event and location.
With temperatures climbing rapidly later in the day, the morning start provides a much better environment for distance running than almost any outdoor activity scheduled for the afternoon.
SURRENDER Women’s Conference Comes to Seagoville
One of the weekend’s largest non-sports events takes place in Seagoville.
The SURRENDER International Women’s Conference begins Friday with a 7 p.m. worship and prayer night at Way Back to God Church, 312 Glendale Ave.
The conference continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at A Bella Vita Weddings and Events Venue, 314 Glendale Ave.
Organizers describe the gathering as a faith-centered event featuring speakers, personal testimonies, worship, prayer, vendors and resources. Lunch is included during Saturday’s conference program.
The two locations sit next to each other on Glendale Avenue, making this one of the most convenient multi-day events for Seagoville residents this weekend.
RPM Speedway Returns Saturday Night
Saturday night means racing again in Crandall.
RPM Speedway has another regular program scheduled for Aug. 29 featuring Riddle Bros. Roofing Sport Mods, Rick Murray Electric Factory Stocks, 305 Sprints, TotalCare Dwarf Cars and Tuners.
That makes this a different show from last weekend’s Ronny Sigman Memorial, which featured the Touring Outlaw Modified Series and Toddler Mods.
RPM Speedway is located at 1267 County Road 4104 in Crandall. The track’s Aug. 29 schedule is confirmed, although fans should check RPM’s latest race-day information before leaving home for updated gate times, admission information or any weather-related change.
With sprint cars, Sport Mods, Factory Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Tuners all on the card, Saturday gives local racing fans a full night of dirt-track competition without leaving the Crandall area.
Final Saturday of Dollar Days at the Wetland Center
Families looking for something quieter can head toward Combine.
The John Bunker Sands Wetland Center continues its August Dollar Days promotion Saturday. General adult admission is reduced to $1 during August, while children age 12 and younger remain free.
Saturday hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 655 Martin Lane in Combine.
The timing matters because Aug. 29 is the final Saturday of the month. The promotion continues through Aug. 31, but the Wetland Center is normally closed Sundays and Mondays, making Saturday the final practical opportunity for most weekend visitors to take advantage of Dollar Days.
Visitors can explore the boardwalk and trails while looking for birds and other wildlife across the approximately 2,000-acre East Fork wetland system. The Center notes that roughly 300 bird species have been documented in the area.
An early arrival is strongly recommended this weekend because of the heat.
Clear the Shelters Enters Its Final Weekend
Anyone thinking about adding a dog or cat to the family also has a local option.
The Seagoville Animal Shelter is participating in the 2026 Clear the Shelters campaign, which runs through Aug. 31. NBC 5 reports that approximately 60 North Texas shelters are participating this year, with individual shelters determining their own adoption discounts or specials.
Seagoville’s shelter is located at 500 E. Farmers Road. The city lists weekend public adoption hours from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday.
Because individual animal availability can change quickly, residents interested in a particular dog or cat should call the shelter at 972-287-6838 before visiting.
Crandall-Combine Library Offers an Indoor Saturday Option
Families who would rather avoid the afternoon heat can also spend part of Saturday at the Crandall-Combine Community Library.
The library at 500 W. Lewis St. operates from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays during its school-year schedule. Books, computers, Wi-Fi and digital resources make it one of the simplest indoor weekend options in the area.
There is no major special program listed for this Saturday, but sometimes four air-conditioned hours and a stack of books are enough.
Sunday Is the Quietest Day
Sunday is considerably lighter on the public-event calendar.
The Wetland Center and Crandall-Combine Community Library are closed, and Saturday night’s RPM racing will be finished. The Seagoville Animal Shelter remains open from 8 a.m. to noon, providing one of the few scheduled local weekend activities continuing into Sunday.
With temperatures expected to remain above 100 degrees, Sunday may be better suited for church, an early morning activity or something indoors rather than an extended afternoon outdoors.
A Full Weekend Before September Arrives
This weekend has a little more variety than usual.
Friday belongs largely to high school sports, with Seagoville and Crandall opening football season on the road while volleyball and cross country continue their early-season schedules.
Saturday shifts closer to home. Racing returns to RPM Speedway, the Wetland Center offers its final Saturday of Dollar Days, the SURRENDER conference continues in Seagoville, Crandall volleyball remains in tournament action and the Clear the Shelters campaign enters its final weekend.
The only thing residents may want to avoid is the middle of the afternoon.
With triple-digit temperatures expected across the area, early morning and evening activities will be the best bets for anyone planning to spend much of the weekend outside.
