A football program’s history is not measured only by victories. It is also remembered through the coaches who built it, the championship teams that represented it and the players recognized among the district’s best.
Deedie Thompson produced one of the strongest coaching records in Seagoville history. He went 27-12-3 in four seasons, guided the Dragons to the 1950 Region 5-B championship and was named Coach of the Year before becoming the school’s principal.
Boyd Payne followed with a remarkable 16-4 record in two seasons. His 1954 team produced a school-record nine-game winning streak. Rick Toler later coached the Dragons to the 1956 District 11-AA championship and the program’s final playoff appearance before the long drought ended in 1984.
Seagoville returned to championship form under Coach Joe Scott in 1969, sharing the District 12-AA title after defeating Forney 14-13.
The program also produced generations of all-district talent. Leon Tharp, Cleveland Nichols, Lucky King, Frank Stephenson, James Collier, Eli Escobar, John Tenison, John Livingston and Erick Evans were among the many Dragons honored for their performances.
Escobar was named the District 5-AAAA MVP in 1983, and Tenison earned district MVP recognition the following year. Livingston became a first-team all-district running back during the 1987 undefeated regular season.
