Young scientists will have an opportunity to conduct experiments, tackle educational challenges and explore the natural world during the fourth week of summer day camp at the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center.
The “Science Squad” camp is scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, through Friday, July 24, at the Wetland Center, located at 655 Martin Lane in Combine. The official registration page identifies the program as an in-person event organized by the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center, with activities beginning at 9 a.m. July 21.
The four-day program is designed for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Campers will be separated into kindergarten-through-third-grade and fourth-through-sixth-grade groups to provide age-appropriate outdoor activities and enrichment. Participants must be at least 5 years old.
Families may register children for individual days or the complete four-day camp session.
Experiments, Questions and Scientific Discovery
Science Squad will introduce campers to different branches of science and the people who work within those fields. Children will also learn how scientists use questions, observations, experiments and evidence to investigate the world around them.
Each day will include new experiments and challenges intended to encourage campers to ask questions, test ideas and search for answers. Crafts, games and outdoor water activities will also be included throughout the week.
The program supports the Wetland Center’s broader emphasis on hands-on outdoor education. The organization’s stated mission includes educating the public and providing research opportunities related to water reuse, water quality and supply, wildlife conservation and wetland systems.
Daily Camp Schedule
Before care will be available from 8 to 9 a.m.
The core camp program will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with families asked to have campers arrive by 8:45 a.m.
Water games are scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m. each day. Campers who participate must bring swim attire and a towel. Children must also be able to change into their swimwear without assistance.
After care will be available from 4 to 6 p.m.
Camp Registration Costs
The cost for one day of camp is $60 per child for nonmembers. Wetland Center members pay $54 per child after applying the appropriate membership discount code.
The complete four-day session costs $220 per child for nonmembers and $198 per child for members after the discount code is applied.
Before- and after-care services require separate tickets.
Single-day extended-care prices are:
- Before care only: $5 per child
- After care only: $10 per child
- Before- and after-care combination: $13 per child
Four-day extended-care packages are:
- Before care only: $15 per child
- After care only: $30 per child
- Before- and after-care combination: $45 per child
Families may also purchase before- or after-care service at the Wetland Center’s front desk on the day of camp.
What Campers Should Bring
Children should wear closed-toe shoes and clothing suitable for the day’s weather. Each camper should bring a refillable water bottle, lunch, snacks, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
Swim attire and a towel will be necessary for the afternoon water activities.
The John Bunker Sands Wetland Center describes its education programs as hands-on, outdoor experiences that connect participants with wetland science and nature. The center is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
