The so called drama around George Pickens and the Cowboys is way overblown. The coach says it best: GP loves it here, and Big D loves GP right back.
George Pickens has not shown up at The Star for voluntary OTAs. The internet erupted. Cowboys fans braced for another contract soap opera. But the real story is far less dramatic than the headlines suggest.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed what the Cowboys have known all along. Pickens is not off the grid. He is not staging a protest. He is out there throwing routes with Dak Prescott.

What Actually Happened
The Cowboys placed a $27.3 million franchise tag on Pickens in March 2026. He signed it in late April, locking himself in for the season. The front office made clear it will not negotiate a long term deal before the July 15 deadline.
That is the business side. On the football side, nothing has broken down. OTAs are voluntary under the collective bargaining agreement. Missing them is not a fine or a violation of any kind.

The Numbers That Drive This Whole Conversation
Pickens earned his price tag the hard way in 2025. He put up the best numbers of his career in his first season with the Cowboys, earning his first Pro Bowl and second team All Pro honors.

Those are WR1 numbers on any roster in the NFC East. Pickens finished third in the NFL in receiving yards. He averaged 15.4 yards per catch. He was named offensive MVP of the Pro Bowl Games.
Does the Absence Even Matter?
The Cowboys have been down this road before. CeeDee Lamb skipped OTAs in 2024 before signing a massive extension in August. Micah Parsons held out the entire offseason in 2025. This situation does not look like either of those cases.
Pickens already signed the tag. He is communicating with his coach. He is training with his quarterback. The mandatory minicamp does not start until June 16. Fines only kick in if he skips that.

What to Watch Going Forward
The real deadline is July 15. That is when the window closes on any long term extension under the current franchise tag rules. The Cowboys have said they will not negotiate before then. So both sides go into 2026 with their eyes wide open.
If Pickens repeats his 2025 season or gets better, his market value shoots even higher in 2027 free agency. The Cowboys know this. So does Pickens. For now, the only thing that matters is what happens between the lines this fall.
And right now, GP is throwing routes with Dak Prescott. That is not the image of a man who wants out. That is the image of a man who wants to get paid — and wants to win while doing it.
