Every community has the mornings it does not forget. For Crandall, one of those came in the early hours of August 10, 2024, when a routine panic alarm call at a gas station on FM 741 turned into a gunfight that left two law enforcement officers wounded and a man dead.
This week’s Crandall Flashback revisits that night, what happened, how the community responded, and where things stood once the dust settled.
A Quiet Stretch of FM 741
The Texas Pride Exxon sits along FM 741 in the 5000 block, in the Heartland area between Crandall and Forney. It is the kind of stop familiar to anyone who drives that stretch of road regularly, fuel, snacks, a cup of coffee before sunrise.
At approximately 3:09 a.m., a panic alarm came in from the store. A Crandall police officer and a Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded and arrived at the scene within minutes.
Gunfire in the Parking Lot
According to statements from Crandall Police Department and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, the officers made contact with an adult male suspect in the parking lot. The man displayed a firearm, and shots were exchanged. Both officers were struck in the leg. The officers returned fire, and the suspect was also hit.
Officers attempted life saving measures on the man at the scene, but he did not survive his injuries, according to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office.

The Officers’ Recovery
Both wounded officers were transported to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office described their injuries as non life threatening. By that Sunday, both had been released from the hospital.
Sheriff Beavers offered a brief, grateful statement on their recovery, saying simply that the officers were doing well and crediting their safety to forces watching over them, according to FOX 4 Dallas Fort Worth.
A Stunned Neighborhood
For residents living near the Exxon, the scene the next morning was hard to process. Crime scene tape, dozens of evidence markers, and law enforcement vehicles surrounded a store many neighbors visited regularly.
One nearby resident, Carnell McCurdy, told CBS Texas he lived just two blocks behind the store and admitted the closeness of the violence to his own home, where he is raising three young children, was unsettling.
Statewide Attention
The shooting drew attention well beyond Kaufman County. The Texas Municipal Police Association called it a harrowing incident and pointed to it as part of a troubling pattern of violence faced by law enforcement, with representatives from the association traveling to the scene alongside officers from Crandall Police, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, and Talty Police.
The Texas Rangers responded to investigate the officer involved shooting, the standard process for incidents in which law enforcement uses deadly force in Texas.
What We Still Do Not Know
In the time since the shooting, the identities of the suspect and the two officers involved have not been publicly released. No further public update on the Texas Rangers’ investigation findings has been issued.
