Seagoville Trivia: State Basketball Included A Dragon

Date:

John Tenison earned a place on the 1985 UIL Class 4A boys basketball all-tournament team even though Seagoville did not reach the championship game. The senior forward stood 6-foot-4 and represented the Dragons at the state tournament.

Seagoville entered the tournament with a 20–11 record and faced Bay City in the semifinals. Bay City won 89–64, ending the Dragons’ run one round short of the final.

The other semifinal matched Lamesa with New Braunfels. Lamesa advanced with a 67–64 victory, then lost to Bay City 65–63 in the championship game. Seagoville’s semifinal opponent therefore went on to win the state title.

Tenison’s individual recognition survived the team’s elimination. The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches selected the all-tournament group, and the UIL preserves the names in its official archive.

The other selections were Bay City’s Hart Lee Dykes and LaBradford Smith and Lamesa’s Jerry Mason and Chris Mason. Tenison was the Seagoville representative among those five honorees.

The bracket supplies a particularly useful correction to an easy mix-up: the 1985 Dragons were state semifinalists, not state finalists. Their achievement was a trip to the tournament’s final four and an individual place among its recognized players.

The school’s state appearance also came well before the later college and professional careers that made other Seagoville basketball names nationally familiar.
