Is Walmart Advancing Near Crandall?

Date:

A proposed Walmart Supercenter in Crandall has cleared a city planning vote and remained part of infrastructure coordination in 2026, public records show. But a verified construction schedule and opening date remain unresolved.

That matters for residents watching the U.S. 175 and FM 741 commercial corridor. The project has a documented history beyond the “Coming Soon Walmart” label on a brokerage map. The records reviewed for this report, however, do not establish that the store will open in 2027.

As of October 31, the clearest description is a planned Supercenter and fuel station with an approved site plan, an economic development agreement, and documented road-improvement coordination.

Current store-building construction and a company-confirmed opening timetable were not independently established.

What Crandall Actually Approved

On May 13, 2025, Crandall’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted 4–0 to approve a site plan for the Crandall Walmart Supercenter and Fuel Station.

Kimley-Horn presented the request. The minutes identify a 22.71-acre development north of U.S. 175, between Spring Creek and FM 741, within Crandall’s city limits in Kaufman County.

Commissioners also approved a preliminary plat for Lots 2–4, Block 1, WM River Ridge, by a 4–0 vote.

These actions establish that a named Walmart project entered and cleared that stage of the city’s development process. They do not establish that the building is under construction, that all permits have been issued, or that an opening date has been set.

The Brokerage Map Shows A Different Property

The May 2026 Crandall Prime brochure markets a separate, approximately 35.5-acre property at the northwest quadrant of U.S. 175 and FM 741. It identifies that marketed property as being in Crandall’s extraterritorial jurisdiction and depicts a nearby Walmart as coming soon.

Readers should distinguish the brochure’s advertised tract from the Walmart development described in city minutes. The brochure’s acreage, jurisdiction, and availability estimate should not be assigned to Walmart.

The municipal record provides the more specific project identification: the 22.71-acre Walmart proposal associated with WM River Ridge. An exact appraisal-account number and final street address were not independently verified for this report.

A leasing map can help explain how brokers position surrounding land. Its “coming soon” label does not supply a construction deadline.

An $8 Million Agreement Adds Context

The Texas Comptroller’s economic development agreement database identifies a Crandall agreement with Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust, effective December 2, 2024.

The city-reported entry lists a total monetary value of $8 million and identifies sales and use tax as the funding source or tax implicated.

Its description says the agreement continues until the earlier of aggregate payments reaching $8 million or 15 years after the facility opens to the public, unless terminated sooner under its provisions.

For residents, that introduces a public-finance question alongside the shopping question: what obligations must be met before payments become due?

The listed value should not be described as $8 million already paid to Walmart. Nor does the existence of an agreement establish that the store has opened or that construction is complete. Actual payments, compliance, and any later amendments require separate verification.

Road Coordination Continued In 2026

The city manager’s report included in the August 17, 2026, Crandall Economic Development Corporation agenda names Walmart in ongoing infrastructure coordination.

The report says city staff met with the Texas Department of Transportation and received confirmation that the FM 741 roadway expansion project was fully funded. It separately describes coordination with QuikTrip, a senior apartment project, and Walmart to finalize funding for turn-lane improvements and a traffic signal.

That wording distinguishes funding for the broader roadway expansion from funding arrangements for the turn lanes and signal.

Walmart’s inclusion is evidence of continued city coordination involving the project in 2026. It does not establish that those arrangements were subsequently completed or identify a date when Walmart could begin operating.

For future customers and nearby residents, access arrangements deserve attention alongside the store itself. Turn lanes, signals, and driveway connections will help determine how traffic reaches the commercial area.

No Verified 2027 Walmart Opening

Publicly searchable state construction records reviewed for this report did not yield a verified Architectural Barriers filing identifying the Crandall Walmart store.

That is a limited finding. An unsuccessful public-record search does not establish that no municipal permit exists, no civil work has occurred, or no filing could appear under another project name.

Care is also needed when reviewing nearby projects. A state filing for Kroger 679 on FM Road 741 lists a June 14, 2027, completion target. That record concerns Kroger, and its schedule cannot be used to date Walmart’s arrival. A filed construction-completion target also differs from a retailer’s announced opening date.

Direct confirmation from Walmart was not obtained for this report. Store size, hiring plans, department offerings, operating hours, and a grand-opening date therefore remain unverified.

What Residents Should Watch Next

The next meaningful update would connect the approved proposal to current implementation: a Walmart-specific building permit, an identifiable state construction filing, confirmed construction activity, or a company announcement.

Updated road-funding agreements and approved access plans would also help establish how the store fits into the corridor’s development schedule.

Until those details are verified, residents can reasonably distinguish two findings. Crandall’s Walmart proposal has a documented planning and agreement history, with infrastructure coordination continuing into 2026. A definite opening year remains unconfirmed.
