An Outdoor Classroom on 500 Acres
The center sits on 500 acres in Seagoville. It includes more than four miles of nature trails. The three named trails are the Post Oak Preserve Trails, the Ponds and Prairie Trail and the Old Field Trails.
The main building covers 26,000 square feet. Interactive exhibits feature world ecosystems and plant and animal facts. Other exhibits cover prairie, forest, creek and pond habitats, along with a fossil study area.
The center has four science laboratories with equipment for environmental field studies.
It also has an ecology theater with 70 seats. Younger students can use a nature play area built for early childhood learners.
Students can visit a working barn with a variety of livestock to observe, learn about and feed. The center also houses live mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
A fossil collection is available for observation and study.
Outdoor features include a classroom pavilion and gardens for vegetables, flowers and herbs. An astronomical observatory has several telescopes, binoculars and other equipment.
Summer Science Enrichment Program
The center’s Summer Science Enrichment Program is an outdoor experience for Dallas ISD students.
It serves students who finished the fourth or fifth grade and will enter the fifth or sixth grade in the fall of 2026. Schools nominate students for the program.
For summer 2026, the program was scheduled to run Monday through Friday from June 1 through June 18. The instructional day lasted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Transportation, breakfast and lunch were provided, and the program could accommodate a maximum of 125 students.
The program focused on life sciences, ecology and environmental concepts. Students took part in outdoor field investigations in the forest, ponds and grassland areas of the center.
Topics included entomology, aquatic ecosystems, botany and geology.
All programs are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Science. Experienced, certified Dallas ISD science teachers deliver the lessons.
Resources for Teachers and Schools
The center is a Texas Environmental Education Advisory Committee professional development provider for prekindergarten through 12th grade science educators.
It partners with various organizations to offer workshops throughout the year. It is also a Region 10 Learning on Location site that supports teams of educators as they develop cross curricular lessons or units.
The Dallas ISD Science Resource Center offers educators in the district complimentary access to lab equipment, kits and models. Expert support is included.
The goal is to help teachers offer students inquiry based lab experiences in science.
Dallas ISD schools can also schedule a free field trip to the center. Experienced teachers, naturalists and volunteers work with visiting teachers and students. Bilingual instruction is available.
