How City Boards and Commissions Give Residents a Voice

Local residents can help shape Seagoville’s future by volunteering their experience, ideas and time through a city board, commission or committee.

City boards, commissions and committees provide an important connection between Seagoville residents and the City Council. These groups serve in an advisory capacity, allowing citizens to study community issues, discuss public priorities and present recommendations to elected officials.

Board members bring different backgrounds and perspectives to local government. Their participation helps city leaders understand how policies, services, development decisions and community programs may affect the people who live and work in Seagoville. While advisory boards generally do not replace the authority of the City Council, their work can help Council members make better-informed decisions.

Residents interested in serving may complete the City of Seagoville Boards and Commissions application and identify the groups on which they would prefer to serve. Annual appointments are completed by the City Council in June. Terms generally last two years unless a person is appointed to complete an unexpired term. Eligibility requirements can vary by board, and some positions require applicants to be registered voters of the city.

Serving on a board is an active public commitment. Newly appointed and reappointed members must be sworn in, complete required paperwork and finish Open Meetings Act and Public Information Act training. Members are also expected to attend scheduled meetings, prepare for discussions and participate consistently throughout their terms.
