Labor Day weekend brings a mix of high school sports and outdoor activities to Seagoville, Crandall and Combine, with Friday night football, volleyball, a major Saturday cross-country meet and an early-morning birding event among the highlights.
Seagoville High School will be especially busy Friday, with the Lady Dragons hosting Thomas Jefferson in volleyball before the Dragons football team takes the field against Bryan Adams.
Saturday shifts the attention east to Crandall, where the Pirates will host their annual cross-country invitational with varsity, junior varsity and middle school runners competing throughout the morning.
The John Bunker Sands Wetland Center also has its First Saturday birding program scheduled in the Combine area.
Compared with last weekend, the public community-event calendar is relatively light, making high school athletics and outdoor recreation the biggest local attractions.
Seagoville Hosts Bryan Adams Friday Night
The Seagoville Dragons finally get to play in front of their home crowd.
Seagoville hosts Bryan Adams at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Seagoville Stadium/Henry Field in a non-district football game.
The Dragons enter their home opener 0-1 after falling 23-8 at Palestine last Friday.
Bryan Adams arrives at 1-0 after opening its season with a 42-35 victory over Irving Nimitz.
That gives Friday’s matchup a straightforward storyline: Seagoville is looking for its first victory of the season while Bryan Adams will try to remain unbeaten.
It will also be the only varsity football game involving Seagoville or Crandall that falls within the Friday-through-Sunday weekend calendar.
Crandall played its second game Thursday night against Rowlett at Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland.
Kickoff for Bryan Adams at Seagoville is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Lady Dragons Also Play at Home Friday
Fans heading to Seagoville High School Friday can potentially make it a two-sport evening.
The Seagoville Lady Dragons are scheduled to host Thomas Jefferson in volleyball before the football game.
Public schedule listings agree that the match is Friday at Seagoville High School but currently disagree on the varsity start time.
NFHS Network lists the varsity match for 7:30 p.m., while another current schedule listing has shown an earlier time.
Because of that discrepancy, anyone planning to attend volleyball should confirm the final start time before leaving home.
Seagoville is coming off a 3-0 loss to Wilson earlier this week and will be looking to get back in the win column against Thomas Jefferson.
Friday is Seagoville varsity volleyball’s only scheduled match of the weekend.
Crandall Hosts Major Cross-Country Meet Saturday
One of the largest sporting events taking place locally this weekend begins early Saturday morning.
Crandall High School hosts the 2026 Crandall Pirates Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 5.
Check-in and packet pickup begin at 6:15 a.m., with racing scheduled to start at 7 a.m. on a rolling schedule.
The meet includes:
- Varsity boys 5K
- Class 6A/5A varsity girls 5K
- Junior varsity boys 5K
- Class 6A/5A junior varsity girls 5K
- Class 4A-and-under varsity girls two-mile
- Class 4A-and-under junior varsity girls two-mile
- Middle school girls two-mile
- Middle school boys two-mile
Crandall High School is located at 13385 FM 3039.
The course is primarily natural terrain and grass, with runners crossing a concrete road where rubber mats are expected to be placed.
Crandall ISD lists the event on its Saturday athletics calendar, and Texas MileSplit confirms Crandall as the host.
The meet also includes a substantial field of visiting schools along with Crandall High School and Crandall ISD middle school teams.
For spectators, the early start should make this one of the better outdoor options of the weekend before afternoon temperatures begin climbing.
Crandall Volleyball Has Limited Weekend Action
Crandall varsity volleyball does not have a match scheduled Friday or Saturday.
The Lady Pirates played Ursuline Academy on Thursday and are scheduled to return to varsity competition Tuesday against Midlothian.
Crandall ISD does list JV Black volleyball action Saturday morning at Van Alstyne.
That means anyone specifically looking for varsity volleyball this weekend will have to turn toward Seagoville’s Friday match against Thomas Jefferson.
No Crandall Varsity Tennis Until Tuesday
Crandall’s varsity tennis team also gets the weekend off.
The district calendar lists the Pirates’ next varsity fall tennis match for Tuesday, Sept. 8, when Crandall hosts Midlothian Heritage at 4 p.m.
No Crandall varsity tennis event is listed for Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Publicly available Seagoville schedules also do not show a varsity tennis event for the Dragons this weekend.
That leaves cross country as the major Saturday high school competition taking place inside the immediate Seagoville-Crandall-Combine coverage area.
First Saturday Bird Tour at Wetland Center
Saturday morning also provides an option for residents who prefer binoculars to scoreboards.
The John Bunker Sands Wetland Center is scheduled to hold its First Saturday Walk & Talk Bird Tour beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 5.
The Wetland Center is located at 655 Martin Lane in the Combine area.
The program gives visitors an opportunity to explore the wetlands while learning about the bird species that use the habitat.
The nearly 2,000-acre East Fork Wetland Project has become one of the region’s significant birding destinations, with hundreds of bird species documented in and around the wetlands.
An early start is particularly appropriate this time of year, both for bird activity and for avoiding the hottest portion of the day.
Visitors interested in the guided program should check the Wetland Center’s latest event information before arriving for any registration or participation requirements.
Crandall’s Saturday Calendar Starts Early
Cross country will dominate the Crandall ISD calendar Saturday.
The district lists the Crandall Pirates XC Invitational beginning early in the morning for both high school and middle school athletes.
Outside athletics, the City of Crandall’s official municipal calendar is unusually quiet this weekend.
Friday is primarily a service-calendar day, with recycling pickup scheduled for the Blue Zone and bulk-and-brush pickup scheduled for the Green Zone.
No major City of Crandall festival, concert or community celebration is listed for Saturday or Sunday.
That makes the cross-country invitational the clearest public gathering in Crandall this weekend.
Seagoville City Calendar Is Also Quiet
Seagoville’s official city calendar does not list a major municipal event for Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
The next notable city-calendar item comes Monday, Sept. 7, when Seagoville City Hall, the library and Senior Center will be closed for Labor Day.
Residents planning to conduct city business should therefore keep the holiday closure in mind when the weekend ends.
The city calendar becomes busier later in September, including public meetings and the Third Saturday Clean Up, but this weekend itself belongs largely to school sports and privately organized activities.
Labor Day Creates a Three-Day Weekend
Although this roundup focuses on Friday through Sunday, the calendar has one important difference this week.
Monday is Labor Day.
Both school districts have the holiday on their calendars, and Crandall ISD lists Sept. 7 as a student and staff holiday.
Seagoville municipal offices also have Labor Day closures scheduled.
That gives many families an extra day away from school and work even though the local organized-event calendar is relatively light.
Saturday Offers the Most Variety
Friday belongs to Seagoville.
The Lady Dragons are scheduled to host Thomas Jefferson in volleyball, followed by the biggest local event of the night when Bryan Adams visits Seagoville for the Dragons’ football home opener.
Saturday belongs more to Crandall and Combine.
Crandall High School hosts runners from across the region for the Pirates Cross Country Invitational beginning at 7 a.m., while the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center begins its First Saturday birding program at 7:30 a.m.
Sunday has little on the published local event calendar, making it the quietest day of the three.
For residents trying to stay close to home this Labor Day weekend, the strongest choices are simple: Friday night under the lights in Seagoville, an early Saturday morning at the cross-country course in Crandall or a quieter walk through the wetlands near Combine.
