The City of Seagoville is accepting applications for a new Youth Advisory Commission. The program will give local high school students a formal role in advising city leaders. Applications are due by Sept. 30.
Students can apply online through the city’s boards and commissions portal. Applications may also be submitted by email or in person at Seagoville City Hall.
Commission Purpose and Structure
The City Council discussed the commission during a June 23 meeting. City staff described it as a way to create a formal youth voice within city government.
The commission will include as many as 10 students serving one year terms. Members may elect student officers, including a chair and vice chair. City staff will serve as liaisons to the group.
The commission is advisory only. It will not replace the City Council or set city policy. Members will offer recommendations and a student perspective on issues that affect Seagoville’s youth.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must live in Seagoville. They must be at least 15 years old and enrolled in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade.
Students may attend school in Dallas, Mesquite or Crandall ISD. Private school, charter school and homeschool students may also apply. They must still meet the city’s residency, age and grade requirements.
Application Requirements
The online application asks students to confirm their eligibility and list their school. It also requires contact information for a parent or guardian.
Each applicant must submit a short written statement explaining their interest in the commission. A letter of recommendation is also required and should be obtained before starting the application.
Selected members must commit to a one year term and attend meetings regularly. A parent or guardian must also sign the application and agree to provide transportation when necessary.
The city’s standard background check and voter identification requirements do not apply to student applicants. Where the form asks for a voter identification number, students should enter “student.”
How to Apply
Students can apply online through the city’s portal. Applications may also be delivered in person to Seagoville City Hall at 702 N. Highway 175. They can also be emailed to the City Secretary’s Office.
Questions can be directed to the City Secretary’s Office at 972.287.6819 or citysecretary@seagoville.us.
The application deadline is Sept. 30.
