The calendar is relatively quiet at the area’s two community libraries this week, but September programming is about to pick up quickly.
For Aug. 31 through Sept. 6, the biggest immediate news is the Labor Day schedule at the Seagoville Public Library. Crandall-Combine Community Library, meanwhile, is preparing for the return of Children’s Story Time next week.
Here is what residents should know this week, along with a look at the programs coming immediately after the holiday.
Seagoville: Shortened Week for Labor Day
Anyone planning a trip to the Seagoville Public Library late this week should take note of an extended holiday closing.
The library will be closed Friday, Sept. 4 through Monday, Sept. 7 for the Labor Day weekend.
No special public program is currently posted for Monday through Thursday this week, making it a good time for patrons to pick up books, return materials or take care of other library business before the four-day closure begins.
The holiday also affects one of Seagoville’s regular monthly activities.
Fiber Arts Club normally meets on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. Because the first Monday in September falls on Labor Day, Sept. 7, that normal meeting date falls during the library closure. The library has not posted a replacement date.
Fiber Arts is open to all ages and experience levels. Participants normally bring a current project and supplies, with extra materials welcome for sharing.
Story Time Returns Sept. 9
The bigger news for families with younger children comes immediately after the holiday.
Seagoville Public Library will begin its fall Story Time schedule Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m.
The weekly program is designed for children ages 3 to 5 and will continue on Wednesdays. Story Time gives preschool-age children an opportunity to experience books and other early-literacy activities in a group setting.
It is one of several recurring programs returning as the library moves into its school-year schedule.
Homeschool Hangout Begins Sept. 10
Local homeschool families will also have a new weekly reason to visit the library.
Homeschool Hangout begins Thursday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. and is scheduled to continue on Thursdays.
The program expands the library’s daytime programming for school-age children and provides homeschool students and families with another local activity during the school week.
The Seagoville Public Library is located at 702 N. Highway 175.
Chess Club Returns Sept. 8
Seagoville Chess Club will also be back immediately after the holiday weekend.
The club meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m., putting the next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Chess Club is recommended for ages 8 and older and welcomes players with different experience levels.
Teen Night follows the library’s second-and-fourth-Monday schedule, with the next regular meeting falling Monday, Sept. 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The program includes games, crafts, art and other activities for teens.
Together, Chess Club, Story Time, Homeschool Hangout and Teen Night will make the middle of September considerably busier than this holiday-shortened week.
Crandall-Combine: Story Time Returns Next Tuesday
The Crandall-Combine Community Library also has a light public program calendar for Aug. 31 through Sept. 6, but its fall children’s programming begins next week.
Children’s Story Time returns Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 10 to 11 a.m.
The timing is fitting: Sept. 8 is also International Literacy Day.
The library’s newly published 2026-27 Story Time schedule currently lists two September dates:
Tuesday, Sept. 8 — 10–11 a.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 22 — 10–11 a.m.
Additional Story Time programs are scheduled throughout the school year, including dates in October, November, December, January, February, March and April.
The Story Time schedule lists the Crandall-Combine Community Library at 500 W. Lewis St. in Crandall.
Regular Library Services Continue
A week without a long list of scheduled activities does not mean the libraries are sitting idle.
Residents can still browse books and other materials, use computers and Wi-Fi, search library catalogs and take advantage of digital resources.
Seagoville patrons can access thousands of digital books and audiobooks through the Northeast Texas Digital Consortium, including materials available through OverDrive and Libby.
Crandall-Combine also provides an online catalog and digital resources, along with books, magazines, large-print materials and audiobooks.
For students settling into the new school year, both libraries can also serve a less flashy but important purpose: a quiet place to read, research or work away from the distractions of home.
September Activity Is About to Increase
This week’s calendar may be light, but it serves as the transition into a much more active September.
Beginning Sept. 8, Chess Club returns in Seagoville and Children’s Story Time returns in Crandall. Seagoville follows with preschool Story Time on Sept. 9 and Homeschool Hangout on Sept. 10, with Teen Night returning Sept. 14.
For families looking for free local activities, the fall library calendar is beginning to fill up again.
