The back-to-school rush is giving the area’s two community libraries a quieter week, but that does not mean there is nothing to discover.
For Aug. 17–23, the special-event calendars at the Seagoville Public Library and Crandall-Combine Community Library are taking a breather between summer programming and the activities coming later this month and in September. It is still a good week to grab a new book, explore the digital shelves or simply find a quieter place to spend some time.
Seagoville Public Library: Clubs Return Next Week
The Seagoville Public Library does not currently list a special program for Aug. 17–23.
The break falls between several of the library’s regular monthly programs. Teen Night is held on the second and fourth Monday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for ages 13–17, while Chess Club meets on the second and fourth Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Fiber Arts Club meets on the first Monday of the month.
That puts the next Teen Night on Monday, Aug. 24, followed by Chess Club on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The library is open Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is closed Saturday and Sunday.
Even without a scheduled program this week, readers do not have to limit themselves to what is sitting on the shelves. Library users can search the online catalog, manage their accounts and access digital materials through services including OverDrive and Libby.
The Seagoville Public Library is located at 702 N. Highway 175.
Crandall-Combine: School-Year Hours Are Back
The Crandall-Combine Community Library’s online calendar does not currently show a public activity scheduled for Aug. 17–23.
Families can already start planning for fall, however. The library has released its 2026–27 Children’s Story Time schedule, with the first two September dates set for Sept. 8 and Sept. 22.
In the meantime, the library is operating its August-through-May schedule: Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is closed Sunday.
Located at 500 W. Lewis St. in Crandall, the joint city-school library provides free services to residents of Kaufman County. Its website also provides access to the library catalog, library-card information and digital reading resources.
Questions can be directed to the library at 972-427-6120 or library@crandall-isd.net.
Try Something Different This Week
A lighter program calendar can be useful in its own way. Families can let children pick their own back-to-school reading, students can investigate research resources before homework starts piling up, and adults can browse digital collections without making another trip across town.
Sometimes the best library activity is still the simplest one: walk in without knowing what you want and leave with something you did not expect to find.
