Why Seagoville Families Deserve a Say on Data Centers

By Merv Moore | October 5, 2026

Seagoville is the kind of town where neighbors still wave and look out for one another. So many local residents have described the city in much the same way. That feeling is exactly why families choose to put down roots here.

It is also why the idea of an AI data center in this area deserves a hard look. A Gallup poll conducted in March 2026 found that seven in 10 Americans oppose building one in their local area. Nearly half, 48 percent, said they are strongly opposed.

Opposition ran highest in the South at 75 percent. Those numbers are a warning that communities should not ignore.

Why Seagoville Works for Families

Seagoville is a bilingual community. The Census Bureau reports that 41.7 percent of residents age 5 and older speak a language other than English at home. That mix of languages and cultures is part of what makes the city welcoming.

The city is also a safe place to raise children. Analysis of 2024 FBI data shows a violent crime rate of 108 per 100,000 residents in Seagoville. The national rate that year was 359.

Seagoville has grown but still feels like a town. The city counted 21,077 residents in the 2025 U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts. The full 75159 ZIP Code area, which includes Combine, counted 23,846.

Community life still centers on gathering together. Bruce Central Park hosts Mayfest, SeagoFest, and the holiday tree lighting. The city also hosts July 4th fireworks and regional events that draw visitors from across the DFW area.

The city has invested in safety as it has grown. It opened a new police station and a new fire station on the same property. A new urgent care facility has also opened on Malloy Bridge Road.

Families here deserve answers before the first shovel hits the ground.

What Data Centers Could Mean Here

Seagoville has approved zoning that allows data center uses. City leaders said so in a January 2026 Business View Magazine feature and called data center interest a potential catalyst. That makes this a local question and not just a national one.

Power is the first concern. University of Michigan professor Ben Green told the Harvard Gazette that data centers could soon use 10 to 15 percent of national electricity demand. He also said households near data centers often see electric bills rise by a factor of two or more.

Gallup asked opponents why they feel the way they do. Among them, 18 percent cited water use and 18 percent cited energy use. Another 15 percent pointed to higher utility bills and 9 percent named noise.

City leaders say water capacity is not a constraint because of a partnership with the City of Dallas. Even so, power demand and utility costs remain open questions for families who pay the bills.

Jobs are another concern. Green said a finished data center often needs only 20 to 50 staff members. Construction work usually lasts a year or two.

Tax breaks matter too. Green said Virginia and Georgia gave up more than a billion dollars in revenue over the last year through data center incentives. Money like that could otherwise help schools and public services.

The Urban Institute notes that Texas is among the states that limit what local community benefit agreements can cover. That could leave residents with less leverage than they expect.

A Call for a Public Voice

We are not saying technology is the enemy. We are saying a decision this large should not be made quietly. Seagoville has six community boards and commissions that invite resident participation.

Residents should ask early about power and utility rates. They should also ask about noise and tax breaks. And they should ask how many permanent jobs would truly be created.

Seagoville’s bilingual and family centered character is worth protecting. Any project that wants to join this community should earn its place in the open.
