The offenses preparing to meet Friday at Pirate Stadium have reached their production in dramatically different ways.

Terrell has overwhelmed opponents on the ground. Crandall has relied more heavily on quarterback Carlton Lewis and a group of productive receivers.

Terrell has tallied 728 rushing yards and 62 passing yards through two games. Crandall has recorded 224 rushing yards and 305 passing yards.

The Tigers are averaging 395 offensive yards per game based on those totals. Crandall is averaging 264.5.

The contrast creates a matchup between a Terrell offense built to control the line of scrimmage, and a Crandall attack that must create space for its playmakers.

Terrell’s Four-Back Attack

Few teams can match Terrell’s early-season rushing depth.

Antwian Thomas leads the Tigers with 277 yards and two touchdowns on 34 attempts. He is averaging 8.15 yards per carry.

Julian Ashley has been nearly as efficient, gaining 195 yards and scoring three touchdowns on 24 attempts. His average is 8.13 yards.

Lebron Tucker provides the physical component of the rotation. The senior fullback has rushed 28 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Oscar Soto gives the Tigers another explosive option. He has gained 111 yards and scored twice on only 12 attempts, producing an average of 9.25 yards per carry.

The four players have combined for 720 yards and nine rushing touchdowns.

Terrell does not need one runner to handle the entire workload. Thomas, Ashley, Tucker and Soto can remain fresh while forcing a defense to adjust to different running styles.

The Tigers demonstrated that depth against Arlington Seguin, rushing for approximately 350 yards in a 49–41 victory. Thomas gained 196 yards, while Ashley added 95.

Limited Passing, Timely Results

Terrell has not needed a high-volume passing game.

Dallas Morning News statistics list Nolan Hall at 4-of-7 passing for 62 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Tyson Hooper is credited with two receptions for 42 yards and the touchdown.

The small number of attempts does not make Hall irrelevant.

His fourth-down touchdown pass to Hooper against Seguin came after the defense had been forced to devote substantial attention to Terrell’s running attack. That is precisely how the Tigers want to use the pass: selectively and against favorable coverage.

Crandall’s secondary cannot lose track of Hooper or the other Terrell receivers while concentrating on the backfield.

Crandall’s Passing Production

Crandall has accumulated 305 passing yards through two games.

Lewis has completed 32 of 50 attempts, a 64% completion rate, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Jeremiah Douglas leads the Pirates with 123 receiving yards and one touchdown on eight catches. He has averaged 15.38 yards per reception and remains Crandall’s primary downfield threat.

Hezekiah Jordan has caught a team-leading nine passes for 110 yards. His production against Rowlett demonstrated his value as a consistent possession receiver.

Jamari West has four receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown. Davyn Davis has added two catches for 19 yards.

Douglas and Jordan account for 233 of Crandall’s 305 receiving yards. Terrell’s defense must determine whether to devote additional coverage to Douglas or prevent Jordan from repeatedly moving the chains underneath.

That decision could create opportunities for West, Davis and Crandall’s other receivers.

Ward Carries the Running Game

Junior running back Darrik Ward has produced 154 of Crandall’s 224 rushing yards.

Ward has carried 40 times, averaging 3.85 yards per attempt, and has scored all three of the Pirates’ rushing touchdowns. He also has two receptions for four yards.

His best performance came against Braswell, when he rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Rowlett limited him to 61 yards on 10 carries one week later.

Christian Ingram is Crandall’s second-leading rusher with 27 yards on nine attempts. Brayden Irlanda has added 18 yards, while Lewis has gained 12 yards on 16 recorded attempts.

Crandall must find a way to make Ward productive without becoming predictable. If Terrell can consistently stop the run with its front defenders, the Tigers will be able to devote additional coverage to Douglas and Jordan.

The Efficiency Battle

Terrell has averaged approximately 6.9 yards per rushing attempt. Crandall has averaged approximately three.

That difference explains much of the scoring gap between the teams. Terrell has scored 76 points, compared with Crandall’s 39.

Crandall does not necessarily need to match Terrell’s rushing totals. The Pirates need enough production from Ward to create manageable third downs and keep Terrell from treating every possession as an obvious passing situation.

Lewis must also protect the football. His 64% completion rate is encouraging, but his two interceptions represent costly missed possessions for a team that may need to score repeatedly Friday.

Terrell’s offensive formula is established: run the ball, rotate its backs and use Hall’s passing selectively.

Crandall’s formula requires more balance. The Pirates need Ward to draw attention toward the line of scrimmage, Jordan to sustain drives and Douglas to deliver explosive plays.
