Plenty of strong elementary students hit a wall in sixth or seventh grade math. Nothing is wrong with the child and nothing is wrong with the teacher. The subject itself changed shape.

Why the Work Suddenly Feels Different

Elementary math rewards accurate calculation. Middle school math rewards reasoning about relationships. Students move into ratios and integers and variables that no longer represent objects they can count.

Know When to Get Outside Help

Free tutorials before or after school exist on most campuses and go badly underused. Ask the teacher for the schedule and put it on the calendar. Two sessions a week can change a grading period.

The program offers inquiry-based, hands-on extracurricular activities aimed at strengthening positive relationships, critical-thinking skills and academic enrichment. According to Dallas ISD, the program is intended to help close opportunity and achievement gaps while giving students additional opportunities to learn and participate outside the traditional classroom.

Elite Teen Club began Aug. 11 and is scheduled to continue through May 24, 2027. Activities take place after school and continue until 6 p.m.

Only 75 spaces are available, making early registration important for families interested in participating.

Program focus areas include accelerated learning, equity improvement, local accountability, parent services and addressing parent needs, student involvement in extracurricular activities, and student recruitment and retention.

Transportation will also be provided for participating students, giving families another option for students who need transportation home after the extended school day.

The Elite Teen Club is part of Dallas ISD’s Extended Learning Opportunities initiative and is designed to combine academic support with extracurricular experiences that keep students engaged after school.
