Seagoville Property Tax Bill Could Climb About $120 Next Year

Date:

Seagoville homeowners could see a higher city property tax bill next year if the City Council adopts the tax rate currently included in the proposed fiscal year 2027 budget.

Based on a home valued at $241,546, which the city identifies as its median homestead value, the estimated City of Seagoville property tax bill would rise from about $1,740 to $1,860, an increase of approximately $120 a year, or roughly $10 a month.

Proposed Rate Exceeds Current Rate

Seagoville’s current property tax rate is $0.720743 per $100 of taxable value. The rate included in the proposed fiscal year 2027 budget is $0.769910 per $100, an increase of about 6.8 percent in the rate itself.

The proposed rate is also notably higher than the city’s no new revenue rate of $0.707260. The no new revenue rate is intended to generate approximately the same amount of property tax revenue from properties taxed in both years, after adjustments required under state law.

Using the city’s own median home example, a budget funded at that lower rate would produce an estimated city tax bill of about $1,708, compared with $1,860 under the proposed rate, a difference of roughly $152.

Budget Would Grow to $23.5 Million

The higher proposed tax rate accompanies a $23.53 million General Fund budget under consideration for fiscal year 2027. The current General Fund budget stands at approximately $22.65 million, meaning proposed spending would increase by about $876,000, or 3.9 percent.

Several departments would see substantial increases under the proposal.

Police spending would rise from about $4.66 million to $5.32 million, and the Fire Department budget would increase from approximately $4.5 million to $4.85 million.

Other departments and administrative areas would also see increases, while spending in several categories would decline.

Only the City Portion of the Bill

The $1,860 estimate reflects only the City of Seagoville’s portion of a homeowner’s total property tax bill. It does not include taxes levied by other entities, such as a school district, county, hospital district or other applicable jurisdictions.

A homeowner’s actual bill will depend on the property’s taxable value, applicable exemptions and the rates ultimately adopted by every taxing entity covering the property.

As a result, individual increases could be larger or smaller than the city’s median home example suggests.

Rate Not Yet Finalized

The proposed rate has not been adopted. City budget documents call for the City Council to vote separately on the fiscal year 2027 budget and tax rate on Sept. 14.

Until those votes take place, the council retains the ability to revise the budget or adopt a different tax rate.

For now, the city’s latest figures offer a clear picture of what is on the table: if the proposed rate is approved, the typical city property tax bill in Seagoville could rise by about $120 next year.
