Senior Discounts of the Week: AARP Members Save at Denny’s

Local seniors can save money this week on dining, transportation, entertainment, utility bills and outdoor recreation without leaving Seagoville, Crandall or Combine.

Shop in Seagoville’s new Senior Discounts of the Week feature will spotlight discounts and money-saving programs available to older residents in the three communities.

Some offers are ongoing rather than limited to a single week. This week’s list includes only discounts and programs that could be independently verified as currently available.

AARP Members Save 15% at Denny’s

AARP members dining at Denny’s in Seagoville can receive 15% off their check.

The restaurant is located at 400 N. Highway 175.

The AARP discount is available throughout the day, with a maximum discount of $10. Customers should present their current AARP membership information when redeeming the offer.

Several exclusions apply, including alcoholic beverages, certain value meals, merchandise, gift cards and online orders. The discount also cannot generally be combined with other Denny’s promotions or offers.

For seniors who already belong to AARP, it is an easy way to reduce the cost of breakfast, lunch or dinner close to home.

Free Transportation to the Senior Center

Seagoville residents age 60 and older have another opportunity to save through transportation services connected with the Seagoville Senior Citizens Activity Center.

Curb-to-curb transportation to and from the Senior Center is available at no charge.

The center is located at 304 E. Farmers Road and offers activities and services for adults age 60 and older.

Transportation is provided through STAR Transit. Seniors can contact the Senior Center at 972-287-4113 for information or STAR Transit at 877-631-5278 to schedule transportation.

Seniors 60+ Can Receive Half-Fare Transportation

The transportation savings do not end with trips to the Seagoville Senior Center.

Seagoville’s transportation information also states that passengers age 60 and older qualify for half-fare service through STAR Transit.

Veterans and people with disabilities are also eligible for the reduced fare.

Seniors interested in using the reduced-fare program should contact STAR Transit to confirm current eligibility and identification requirements before scheduling a trip.

Free Admission to CISD Events With Pirate Perks

Crandall ISD offers one of the area’s better ongoing senior benefits through its Pirate Perks program.

Community members age 55 and older can receive a Pirate Perks card at no charge.

The card provides free admission to Crandall ISD activities hosted at district facilities, giving senior residents another way to attend local sporting events, performances and other school activities without paying regular admission.

UIL playoff events are excluded.

Cards can be picked up at the Crandall ISD Administration Building, 400 W. Lewis Street. A valid driver’s license is required when presenting the Pirate Perks card.

For seniors who regularly support Crandall students and athletics, the savings can add up over the course of a school year.

Lower Sewer Base Rate for Seniors 65+

Crandall residents age 65 and older may qualify for a reduced monthly sewer base rate.

The city’s current rate schedule lists the regular residential 3/4-inch-meter sewer base rate at $44.37, while the senior rate is $27.54.

That’s a savings of $16.83 on the monthly base rate for qualifying customers.

Under the city ordinance, the senior rate applies to residential customers whose primary household member is age 65 or older and who have registered with the city as senior ratepayers.

Crandall provides a Senior Citizen/Social Security Disability Application for the sewer discount. Applicants are asked to provide identification and account information.

Usage charges may still apply in addition to the base rate.

Residents interested in applying can contact Crandall Utility Billing at City Hall, 110 S. Main Street.

$20 Senior Membership at John Bunker Sands Wetland Center

Seniors age 60 and older can get a substantial membership discount at the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center in Combine.

The Center’s Special Cattail membership costs $20 and is available to seniors 60+, military veterans and students under 25.

For comparison, the regular Individual Dragonfly membership is $40.

The Special Cattail membership includes free admission for the eligible member plus one adult guest, invitations to member events and discounts on select programs.

Valid identification may be required.

The Wetland Center is located at 655 Martin Lane in Combine and provides access to its wetlands, boardwalks, trails and wildlife-viewing areas during regular public hours.

For seniors who enjoy birding, walking, photography or simply spending time outdoors, the $20 membership can be a particularly good local value.
